Jeff Cox outlined A&S Process

Comment:  Communication needs to be better.

Q.  What is the timeline?

            A.  We are in the visioning phase鈥攖he what do want to do phase.  It will run this year.  We will then need to spend a year asking how we can do what we want to do and a year implementing our plans.

Q.  What is the role of the committee?

            A.  The committee has not met yet.  It will be listening broadly to the conversations we are having.  They will draft a final report which they will bring back to the campus.

Q.  Are you going to split up the College of Arts and Sciences?

            A.  That is not the plan or goal of this process.  The AF process will take up any ideas that are presented, including academic reorganization.

Q.  How specific should white papers be?

            A.  We have no preconceived idea of what the white papers will look like.  However, if you have good ideas, make sure they are spelled out fully enough to inform conversations and the work of the committee.

Comment:  We need to support interdisciplinarity.

Q.  Can the process be slowed down?

            A.  If need be, yes, but we are hoping for this discussion to interact with other planning processes.  Also, a quick process avoids wearying the campus.

Comment:  There is a dire need for central classroom space.

Comment:  the library is being turned into a study hall.  The single greatest challenge to the AF process is to make the library equal to the quality of the faculty.  The libraries should support the work of the schools and colleges.

Comment:  We should build an underground library to provide more space.
