Abstract: Sensors and feedback play important roles in the safe control of atmospheric and space vehicles. In this teaching vignette, the fundamental concepts of sensors and feedback control are presented and discussed within the context of an introductory undergraduate course in aircraft stability and control. The concept of full state feedback is introduced and utilized to illustrate the theoretical and practical aspects of designing a basic closed-loop controller for regulating aircraft behavior.

Bio: Melvin Rafi is currently a postdoctoral researcher at the General Aviation Flight Lab at Wichita State University. His current work focuses on developing predictive methods towards aircraft loss-of-control mitigation and exploring intelligent controls in spaceflight and astrodynamics. His other work has involved various endeavors in adaptive resilient control systems, augmented-reality pilot displays, and development of flight simulation systems. Beyond research and academic pursuits, he is an avid aviation enthusiast, a private pilot, and has a keen interest in digital 3D modeling and animation.
