Choose a Major Using the “What Can I Do with This Major” Resource

You need to choose a major, and are unsure where to start. The online toolWhat Can I Do with This Major?is a great resource to explore possible career choices based on your major.

Here are some tips to get started:

1. Start with the View All Majors tab located on the top bar.

The majors listed on this page may not be the same name as majors at ýĻƷ, so choose what is similar. You can also use this tool to expand and learn about a major you know little about. Read through any of the majors that you’re curious about so you can explore all of your options. There are often industries and majors we have never considered, and this is the place to find them.

2. Once you have chosen a major,explore the Areas and Employers.

Whatever major you choose, it can tie to a lot of industries and potential employers. You may be surprised about how each major can prepare you for a variety of jobs and careers. Make a list of job areas and types of employers that you are interested in exploring.

3. Explore the links: Professional Associations, Occupational Outlooksand Related Resources.

At the bottom of the page, you will see links that help you do additional research about careers related to this specific major. These links connect you to resources in that career or industry. Click through to learn more about a specific profession or job. Additionally, you may find job boards, additional career informationand even ways to connect with professionals in your career or industry.

4. Questions for reflection:

  • What areas do I find most engaging to work in?
  • What way can I blendmajors, minorsԻ/ǰ certificates to match my intersecting interests?
  • Check in with yourself. Notice what feelings and emotions are coming up for you as you navigate. Excitement? Concern?
  • What strategy can I implement to help me define my next steps?
  • What information do I still need to feel confident?

You may find it helpful to connect with an academic advisor or career advisor to talk through your research and reflection.

If you’re a first-year student, meet with your first-year advisor. First-year advisors are an amazing resource on campus and are available to answer any class questions that relate to a major you are interested in. They can also help you map out potential four-year plans, within each major area you are considering. Schedule a meeting with your advisor here.

Connect with Career Services to learn more about the careers you identified and how you can build the skills needed for those careers.
