In consultation with their advisers, students who are majoring in another discipline may pursue a minor in journalism.听 Because journalism is a popular career choice for students in other units鈥攁rt and art history, business, communication, English, sociology, women鈥檚 and gender studies, and other fields in the College of Arts and Sciences, the College of Media, Communication and Information, and the Leeds School of Business鈥攚e offer an 18-credit hour Journalism minor (six courses) with the following requirements.
Requirements
Students must complete 18 credit hours of coursework to complete the minor with a grade of C- or better and an overall GPA in the minor of 2.0. Students may apply no more than six credit hours of transfer work, including three hours of upper-division credit.
Students will take two required courses,听JRNL听1000听and JRNL 2000, which will introduce them to a range of possible interests from broadcasting to print and online media to digital and emerging media and writing for the media. After successfully completing JRNL 1000 and 2000, students should select one 2000-level course and three 3000- or 4000-level journalism courses.
Students may want to emphasize conceptual and theory courses, or they may select skills courses that help to prepare them for possible careers, or complete a combination of the two.
