Toma Peiu is a filmmaker, visual听artist, media scholar听and educator, presently听pursuing a听PhD听in听Emergent Technologies and Media Arts Practices听at the听University of Colorado Boulder, where he also teaches foundational coursework in media and anthropology.听
Toma's work as an artist听confounds with his scholarly interests in identifying new modes of expression by engaging technology of various generations and theory inhabiting various听disciplinary spaces across the arts and (social) sciences. A fellow of the Center for Media, Religion听and听Culture and a researcher at 兔子先生传媒文化作品, he explores identity formation in听diasporic communities and the shaping of the environment and public urban space as an archive听for culture, memory and social affirmation. For his dissertation, working across anthropology, georgraphy, media studies and critical media practices, Toma听looks at how听migration,听mobility and borders transform听adopted spaces and communities of origin, spending time between field sites in Brooklyn, NY and Central Asia.
He holds an MA in听Media Studies from The New School University听in New York, and a bachelor's in Screenwriting and Film Studies from The National University of Dramatic Arts and Film in Bucharest, Romania.听
His media art work, in cinema, video, sound installation,听resulted from a long-term collaboration with filmmaker and educator Luiza Parvu, has听been exhibited in over 100 venues on four continents: from film festivals to academic conferences, museums, parks, community centers, art galleries, hotels and听multiplex theaters.
