Men's Hoops More than a Tad Better

Sophomore Alec Burks called the electric home atmosphere during the game against Oklahoma State on Jan. 15 鈥渃razy . . . it brought me back to high school and my games. So I just love it.鈥 He scored 20 points and collected 11 rebounds, making him one of three Buffs in double figures.

The men鈥檚 basketball team, coached by Tad Boyle, started its Big 12 Conference season in style, winning back-to-back games against nationally ranked opponents for the first time in program history.

After CU went 11-4 in the nonconference schedule and extended its home win streak against non-Big 12 opponents to 21, sophomore Alec Burks scored a career-high 36 points in a home victory over No. 9 Missouri in the Big 12 opener. Burks subsequently was named Big 12 Player of the Week. The win over Missouri was CU鈥檚 first against a top-10 team since Feb. 4, 2003. Days later, the Buffs won at No. 21 Kansas State and at home against Oklahoma State.


Sports Locker 

The CU women finished sixth and the men 15th at the NCAA Cross Country Championships. Laura TremblayShalaya KippJoe Bosshard and Andy Wacker earned All-America status.

CU sophomore skier Joanne Reid claimed a junior national championship, winning a 5K junior freestyle race at the U.S. Cross Country National Championships.

The CU men鈥檚 golf team signed four Colorado recruits, including two reigning state high school champions, David Oraee (Class 5A) and John Ahern (4A). Transfer Jessica Wallace was named the Big 12 female Golfer of the Month for November, joining teammate Emily Talley as a fall winner of the award.

In club sports, the CU men鈥檚 soccer team claimed the NCCS national title, defeating Missouri 3-1 in the championship game. Senior Connor Hutchinson scored twice in the finale and was named tournament MVP.
