Positions for Engineering Students at NIST
The Professional Research Experience Program (PREP) is hiring CU undergraduate and graduate students as well as Research Faculty in order to gain experience in the labs of the National Institute of Standards & Technology (NIST).
The program currently has three positions open for undergraduate students :
PREP Undergraduate Position at NIST
Project Description:
This project encompasses Public Safety Communications Research鈥檚 (PSCR) intent to leverage the growing accessibility of virtual reality (VR) technology to develop a state of the art virtual environment for public safety. The goal of this effort will be to design and construct a series of realistic virtual environments which PSCR can use to test the potential impact of new user interfaces (e.g., heads-up-displays, maps, etc.) based on tasks executed within the VR environment.
Position - VR Application Developer:
This role will be responsible for assisting in the development of professional public safety scenarios.
The student should be comfortable working with commercially available VR engines such as Unity or Unreal, although Unreal is preferred.
The student will assist in designing, configuring and performing research to support the design, build, and execution of public safety VR test environments.
The student will have the opportunity to demonstrate the VR environment to NIST staff and researchers, industry and academic partners, and public safety stakeholders.
Eligibility to be in PREP:
- Major must be in a STEM related field and student must possess a 3.0 GPA or higher
Preferred Qualifications:
- Experience working with Java, C#, C++, or Blueprint software on 3D VR development platform
- Experience in 3D graphics, including optimizing 3D performance in games and/or related applications
- Ability to create interactive 3D applications
Undergraduate students are compensated with an hourly rate of pay:
- Freshman - $10.50/hr
- Sophomores - $11.50/hr
- Juniors - $12.50/hr
- Seniors - $13.50/hr
If interested, please send your resume, transcript, and one letter of recommendation to the Program Manager of PREP, Tiffany Mason, at tiffany.mason@colorado.edu.
PREP Undergraduate Position at NIST
Currently we are looking for a CU undergraduate student studying in a STEM related field, earning at least a 3.0 GPA to help with a high-priority activity within the Communications Technology Laboratory (CTL) of the National Institute of Standards and Technology (NIST). The student will help with a program to develop measurement science for future millimeter-wave mobile wireless communication systems. One part of this research program involves the development, verification, and use of 鈥渃hannel sounders,鈥 which are instruments used to characterize the radio propagation environment. NIST has developed state-of-the-art channel sounders and are looking for a student to learn how to use them to assist with data collection in various environments. The student will work with NIST researchers to understand their operation and perform research and system troubleshooting activities as needed. We are seeking someone who is careful and interested in working with equipment, including both data acquisition software and hardware. NIST will provide all background and training. Diverse candidates are encouraged to apply.

PREP Undergraduate Position at NIST
The Statistical Engineering Division (SED) of the National Institute of Standards and Technology is looking for a student with a background in statistics to assist with the development and programming of web-accessible automated interfaces to perform highly rigorous computations of chemical measurement uncertainty. Programming will be done using R () and the R package Shiny () in collaboration with SED statisticians. In addition to developing the software tools, the student will assist with writing an easily accessible guide to lead scientists through the measurement exercise, from study design to analysis and report writing.
The goal of the project is to deliver dedicated, easy-to-use statistical tools for rigorous and reliable approaches to experimental design and data analysis of commonly performed measurements to the chemical measurement community. The data analysis will include a comprehensive measurement uncertainty calculation, accomplished using Bayesian hierarchical models.
Prior background in Bayesian methods and experience with Shiny is preferred, but is not required. Familiarity with R (or a similar coding language) is required.
