It includes a four-stage cycle of learning鈥攃oncrete experience (experiencing), reflective observation (reflecting), abstract conceptualization (thinking) and active experimentation (acting). As Dewey so simply yet profoundly posited, reflection plays a significant pedagogical role in learning from experience and could be considered the crux of the cycle.

Harvey et al. (2016) define reflection as the intentional process of engaging a student鈥檚 cognitive, emotional, and physical capacities to mindfully consider past experiences to learn, grasp and potentially improve future actions. Active reflection enhances both classroom and experiential learning by helping students connect their experience and ideas to future contexts (Kolb & Kolb, 2018).

While the importance of reflection can be critical to learning, it is easy to neglect if dedicated time and space are not provided for it to occur. Intentional and active reflection can take several forms, from prompted writing and journaling to facilitated dialogue, and needn鈥檛 be complex or burdensome to include in a course or program.

One of many approaches, Borton鈥檚 (1970) model for reflection is commonly used in experiential education settings due to its ease of application and includes three primary questions to pose to students 鈥 What? So What? and Now What?

What? (past, descriptive, objective): Revisiting the experience; what happened, what was my role, my reaction and perception, the reaction and perception of others? What are the key facts and aspects of the experience? What went well and what didn鈥檛?

So What? (present, knowledge building): Analyzing, making sense of and understanding the context and meaning of the experience. How did I feel at the time? How do I feel now? What does it mean for me? What did I learn? What are the implications for me? What new knowledge and understanding do I have because of the experience?

Now What? (future, active): Adjusting future outcomes. What might I do differently or the same? How can the experience impact or inform the future? What actions can I take to further build knowledge & skills? What is one key learning/takeaway, the foremost aspect of the experience I want to dig deeper into and apply in future contexts?

The integration of reflection in the learning process, regardless of the form or model utilized, can aid students in constructing meaning from their experience鈥攖hereby creating new knowledge and skills to be applied in other areas of their lives.

Seth Webb serves as the Director of Experiential Education in the 兔子先生传媒文化作品 Center for Leadership.
