5 new ways for your student to get connected through The Rec
Campus Recreation Centers are a great place for students to meet new people, build community, explore new hobbies and stay active. Here’s everything students need to know about what’s new at The Rec this year.Ìý
1. F45 and CrossFit have arrivedÌý
The Main Student Recreation Center has completed construction on a new functional fitness space that provides additional workout areas for students. In addition to new equipment, this space will be used for new workout classes, including:Ìý
F45: These classes provide a functional full-body workout, with this program delivering a mix of 45-minute circuit and HIIT-style workouts. F45 classes are available as part of the group fitness schedule and are open to all Be Fit Pass holders.
CrossFit: CrossFit provides strength and conditioning workouts made up of functional movement performed at a high-intensity level. CrossFit courses are available as part of our small group training program.
2. Get ready for ski and snowboard seasonÌý
Outdoor PursuitsÌýoffers programs that prepare students for a safe and fun Colorado winter. Those wanting to ski and snowboard both inbounds and off piste can benefit from the following:Ìý
Avalanche Awareness (Nov. 7):ÌýThis awareness course will provide insight into the destructive power of avalanches. It will help students understand when and why they happen, and how to have fun in the mountains this winter safely. The course is a great way to get ready for the backcountry season by gaining tips and tools to stay safe and options for continuing training and education. Students canÌý.
AIARE Companion Rescue Course (Dec. 2):ÌýThis AIARE course is a one-day course students can retake regularly to keep up with best practices for rescue techniques and gear. New participants will learn the basics of companion rescue while returning participants will expand their skills with advanced topics and realistic scenario practice. Students canÌý.
Winter Hut Trip (March 22-24):ÌýIn Colorado, winter backcountry hut availability is hard to come by. If your student has always wanted to do a hut trip but can't seem to nab a hut reservation, now is their chance! On this three-day hut trip, the group will travel to and stay at one of Colorado's coveted backcountry huts outside of Georgetown, CO. The trek in is a moderate 5.5 miles with 2,000 feet of elevation gain. This trip is open to backcountry ski and splitboarders or snowshoers and includes lodging and meals. Students canÌý.
3. New Intramural SportsÌý
Intramural sports (IM sports) can be a fun way to stay active, meet new friends and find community on campus. Here are some ideas for how your student can get involved in sports at ÍÃ×ÓÏÈÉú´«Ã½ÎÄ»¯×÷Æ· at a level that’s right for them.Ìý
League registrationÌýis Oct. 12-26, and the season begins Oct. 29. Students can sign up as a team or join a team as a free agent by purchasing a semester or annual Sports Pass. No experience is required to play, and all ability levels are welcome.ÌýÌý
Sports offered include wallyball, badminton, 5v5 basketball, broomball, indoor soccer, innertube water polo and table tennis.Ìý
4. Free classes and eventsÌý
While it can be intimidating for students to put themselves out there or try something new, it can also help them build confidence and find new passions, interests and friends. The Rec Center offers free inclusive events and supportive communities to help get them started.Ìý
Inclusive Rec:ÌýInclusive Rec hosts manyÌýfree eventsÌýthroughout the semester to promote inclusion, allyship and connection. Plus, they’re a lot of fun! Frequent events include pride skate, adaptive training, women’s climbing at the climbing gym, wheelchair basketball and more.
Free Friday Power Hour:ÌýHas your student expressed to you that they want to join a group fitness class but don’t have a Be Fit Pass? The Rec offers a free class every Friday as part ofÌýFree Friday Power Hour. This is a great way for students to explore different types of fitness classes and try something new.
5. Work and playÌý
The Rec is always hiring student employees and seeking candidates who are passionate about physical and mental well-being. If your student has expressed interest in gaining valuable job experience, leadership skills and building friendships,Ìýworking at The RecÌýmight be for them. Work study is also available.Ìý
