Fall 2022 Degree & Diploma Updates

As presented at our Town Hall this past April, several updates to degree & diploma processes including retroactive degrees and academic program discontinuance will become effective beginning Fall 2022. While these are not new procedures, they haven't been applied consistently in the past.

Beginning Fall 2022, the following updates will become standard practice:  

  • Retroactive degrees: Retroactive degree requests will only be accepted in the case of an administrative error.  Students who failed to apply for graduation should be instructed to apply for graduation in the next available conferral term.  
  • Academic program discontinuance: In the event a degree program is discontinued, students currently enrolled in the program have a four-year period in which to complete their degree requirements. This four-year period starts at the end of the academic year in which the Colorado Department of Higher Education (CDHE) takes action to discontinue the program. No new or returning students will be admitted into a discontinued degree program. Students who do not complete the degree requirements in the four-year period are not permitted to receive the discontinued degree. In such cases, credit hours accumulated may be applied to the overall number of credit hours required toward graduation, but the student must seek the advice of their college or school to determine how these credit hours might apply to a new degree program.

Future enhancements to existing procedures:

  • New OnBase forms: Memo-based requests for retroactive degrees, posthumous degrees, degree corrections and licensures will transition to OnBase forms. Look for additional details in a future Registrar Network announcement.
