Campus Q&A: Five things you should know about the Zika virus

The Zika virus, discovered in 1947 in Africa, is related to the viruses that cause yellow fever, West Nile, dengue and chikunguna, and it is spread by bites of the mosquitos Aedes aegypti and, to a lesser extent, Aedes albopictus. In the past the virus was found principally in Africa, southeast Asia, and parts of the Pacific, but over the past several years and especially in the last 6-9 months it has grown 鈥渆xplosively鈥 in the Americas. Brazil has been especially hard hit, and there is concern that the coming Olympics in Rio de Janeiro may cause further expansion of the virus鈥 territority.

UMC to open all-gender restroom

The first multi-stall, all-gender restroom in the University Memorial Center will open in February. Located in the UMC鈥檚 second floor northwest wing, the all gender restroom was first proposed by the UMC Board, a branch of CU Student Government and the governing board of the UMC, in 2011.

CU Athletics to tap into fans鈥 help for water conservation, restoration

Spectators at home basketball games will be prompted to text a pledge to conserve water a s part of CU-Boulder's new Water for the West campaign. For every pledge received, CU Athletics will restore 1,000 gallons of water to the Colorado River Basin through a partnership with the Change the Course initiative.

CU Advocates Day at State Capitol connects lawmakers, supporters

On Jan. 26, the CU Advocates program and the University of Colorado鈥檚 Office of Government Relations hosted the 2016 CU Advocacy Day at the State Capitol. Attendees received updates on the university鈥檚 recent educational, research and economic contributions. Lawmakers and CU officials also briefed advocates on CU鈥檚 legislative priorities, higher education鈥檚 funding outlook for this year and Colorado鈥檚 budget situation.

New CU-Boulder director of ombuds announced

University of Colorado Boulder Provost Russell L. Moore today announced that Kirsi Aulin has been appointed as the new campus ombuds. Aulin replaces Tom Sebok, who retired in December 2015 after 25 years of building and directing the CU-Boulder Ombuds Office.
