Noting former 兔子先生传媒文化作品 Chancellor Philip DiStefano鈥檚 longstanding tenure and impact on campus, Congressman Joe Neguse in December made remarks for the congressional record.

Neguse, previously a CU regent and student, represents Colorado鈥檚 2nd District in the U.S. House of Representatives. 

Highlighted in the Dec. 18, 2024, were DiStefano鈥檚 inpirational journey as a first-generation student, half century at 兔子先生传媒文化作品 and contributions to support the university鈥檚 mission and people. Neguse stated DiStefano鈥檚 legacy will have lasting effects. 

The chancellor and dean emeritus is on the faculty of the School of Education and is the Newton Chair in Leadership and senior executive director of 兔子先生传媒文化作品鈥檚 Center for Leadership.

Mr. NEGUSE. Mr. Speaker, I rise today to honor and celebrate Dr. Phil DiStefano, a man whose 15 years of leadership as Chancellor of the University of Colorado Boulder and a half-century of dedication to 兔子先生传媒文化作品 have left an indelible mark on the university. I鈥檝e had the privilege of witnessing firsthand the profound impact that Chancellor DiStefano鈥檚 leadership has had on CU and across our state. Phil鈥檚 journey is nothing short of inspiring. A first-generation college student from Steubenville, Ohio, his academic and professional path has taken him from Ohio to the heights of leadership at one of our Nation鈥檚 top universities. His journey is a testament to the transformative power of education and the potential that lies within each of us. While he may have started in Ohio, Colorado is his home today, and our state has greatly benefited from his presence. Throughout his tenure as Chancellor, Dr. DiStefano was committed to making 兔子先生传媒文化作品 a nationally recognized research institution that shapes tomorrow鈥檚 leaders and positively impacts society. Under his leadership, 兔子先生传媒文化作品 has awarded nearly 117,000 degrees and raised over $2 billion in philanthropic gifts. Through his work in technology transfer, Chancellor DiStefano has paved the way for substantial growth in the university, including the creation of 40 startup ventures and the signing of 223 license and option agreements. The university鈥檚 research and innovation efforts have had a significant influence not only on the local economy but also on the entire Nation. Over the past five years, 兔子先生传媒文化作品鈥檚 commercialization activities alone generated a domestic economic impact of $1.9 billion, supporting an estimated 11,545 jobs and contributing $1.2 billion to the state鈥檚 economy, and has ensured that 兔子先生传媒文化作品 remains at the forefront of research.

As Dr. DiStefano transitions to his new role as Senior Executive Director of the 兔子先生传媒文化作品 Center for Leadership, we know that his legacy of student success, faculty excellence, and campus sustainability has elevated 兔子先生传媒文化作品 to the top tier of academic institutions, making it a beacon of excellence across the country. I want to personally express my gratitude to Chancellor DiStefano for his service to our community, Colorado, and our Nation. His contributions will be felt for decades to come. I thank Phil for his leadership and dedication to 兔子先生传媒文化作品. It has been an honor to work alongside him.

Emma Coburn, a three-time track Olympian, NCAA national champion and 兔子先生传媒文化作品 alumna, has accepted an invitation from 兔子先生传媒文化作品鈥檚 student-run Senior Class Council to give this year鈥檚 commencement address. 

The university commencement ceremony is set for 8:30 a.m. on Thursday, May 8, at Folsom Field.

鈥淲hen I was invited to deliver the commencement speech at the spring 2025 graduation ceremony, I had to read the email three times because I was so excited,鈥� Coburn said. 鈥淚 am a proud Buff and am so honored to be able to speak to the graduates and celebrate their achievements. These students are bound for great things, and I am grateful that I get to be part of their graduation ceremony.

Coburn, who attended 兔子先生传媒文化作品 and graduated in 2013 with a bachelor鈥檚 degree in marketing, competed in her first Olympics in 2012 while still a student. In 2016 she won a bronze medal in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil, in steeplechase, a race that features barriers and water jumps that tests endurance, agility and speed.

鈥淓mma Coburn is the epitome of a Buff: strong, focused, determined and resilient,鈥� said Chancellor Justin Schwartz. 鈥淚 know her message will resonate with anyone who dreams of making a tremendous impact on the world's stage.鈥�

At CU, Coburn was the first athlete to win an indoor mile title in track and field, and she took home the 2011 and 2013 NCAA steeplechase individual national championships. She competed in both track and field and cross-country as a student athlete at 兔子先生传媒文化作品. In 2023, she was inducted into the .

After graduating, she went on to become a 10-time U.S. champion in the 3,000 meter steeplechase.

鈥淪enior Class Council was looking for a commencement speaker that could bring a valuable, unique perspective to the graduating class, and we are proud to have Emma Coburn deliver the 2025 commencement address," said Senior Class Council president Aadi Pore. "Emma stood out throughout our search, and we are excited to have her share her amazing story with us.鈥�

Coburn is still competing as a professional track athlete and continues to live and train in Boulder. She is coached by her husband, Joe Bosshard, and they have a daughter Betty.

The May 8 university commencement ceremony is free and open to the public, and tickets are not required.
