Welcome to cross-genre ensembles at the University of Colorado Boulder College of Music! Our cross-genre ensembles and curricula support the college’s innovativeÌýuniversal musician approach to achieving our mission.
The following ensembles encourage students to cross traditional boundaries of musical styles and genres, broadening perspectives as they create and collaborate with other diverse musicians.
This ensemble explores a range of musical genres representing an autophysiopsychic—physical, mental and spiritual—approach to musicking. From bebop and hip-hop to spirituals, gospel, blues, R&B, progressive rock and much more, the ensemble explores mind-opening instrumental, vocal and spoken-word creative works.Ìý
This ensemble is open to all ÍÃ×ÓÏÈÉú´«Ã½ÎÄ»¯×÷Æ· students of varying experience in music.Ìý

This ensemble explores the music of historical and contemporary string band traditions in the Americas—traditional and progressive bluegrass and Appalachian old-time, jazz manouche, klezmer, blues, Brazilian choro, indigenous and much more. An emphasis on aural learning, deep listening, stylistic improvisation and understanding instrumental roles will enjoyably challenge all students, providing new skills useful in any professional and casual musical environment.Ìý
This ensemble is open to music majors and other experienced vocalists and instrumentalists (strings, winds/reeds, brass, keyboard instruments). To join the ensemble, please contact the instructor prior to registration.Ìý
